Why in the news?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first human electroencephalogram<\/span> (EEG), created by German physiologist Hans Berger.<\/p>\n

EEG measures the electrical activity in the brain<\/span> generated by neurons. Researchers use EEG in fields like neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and neurolinguistics.<\/p>\n

i) EEG stands for electroencephalography- ‘Electro<\/span>‘ pertains to electricity, ‘encephalo<\/span>‘ to the brain, and ‘graphy<\/span>‘ to representation.<\/p>\n

ii) EEG is commonly used to diagnose epilepsy<\/span> and monitor anaesthesia<\/span> effects<\/span>, sleep patterns, coma activity, and brain death.<\/p>\n

iii) Working of EEG-<\/strong> Neurons in the brain move electrically charged particles, creating electrical activity. EEG tests visualize this activity and help distinguish between normal and abnormal brain states.<\/p>\n

iv) Advantage of EEG-\u00a0<\/strong>EEG setups are simple<\/span> and cost-effective<\/span>. The equipment is small, doesn’t emit radiation or noise, and is non-invasive and portable.<\/p>\n

v) Disadvantages of EEG-<\/strong>
\na. Setting up an EEG test takes time, as this process includes applying gel and placing electrodes. Thicker hair can affect EEG readings<\/span>.
\nb. EEG is good at tracking rapid electrical activity in the brain but is biased towards signals near the brain’s surface<\/span>. It may not accurately pinpoint the origin of electrical activity within the brain.<\/p>\n

To overcome limitations, EEG is often used with other tests like MRI and advanced data processing methods.<\/p>\n
