As of March 31, 2024, the total value of securities in FCA was $468.98 billion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What are the Interest Rate Impact?<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 315px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.indianexpress.com\/2024\/07\/curency.jpg?resize=315%2C352&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Return on foreign currency assets doubles in two years\" width=\"315\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: TH<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>i) Due to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">rising interest rates in the US and other developed countries<\/span>, the return on FCA increased to 4.21% in March 2024 from 2.11% in March 2022. This resulted in the RBI earning over $19 billion in interest income for the fiscal year ending in March 2024.<\/p>\n<p>ii) The rate of return on FCA was 3.73% in FY2023, 2.10% in FY2021, and 2.65% in FY2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Gold Reserves of India<\/h2>\n<p>i) During FY24, the RBI <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">reduced gold held abroad by around 50 tonnes<\/span>, bringing the total to 387.26 metric tonnes. RBI reduced its gold holding due to high cost of keeping gold abroad.<\/p>\n<p>iii)\u00a0 As of March 2024, the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">RBI held 822.10 metric tonnes of gold<\/span>, with 408.31 metric tonnes held domestically and 26.53 metric tonnes as gold deposits.<\/p>\n<h2>About FCA<\/h2>\n<p>i) India&#8217;s Foreign Exchange Reserves comprise<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Foreign Currency Assets<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Gold<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">SDR&#8217;s<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Reserve Bank position with International Monetary Fund<\/span> (IMF).<\/p>\n<p>ii) Foreign currency assets include investments in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">US Treasury bonds<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Bonds\/Treasury Bills of other selected Governments<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">deposits with foreign central banks<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">foreign commercial banks<\/span> <em>etc<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Composition of FCA:<\/h2>\n<p>i) As of March 2024, out of the total FCA of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">$570.95 billion<\/span>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>a)<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> $468.99 billion<\/span> was invested in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">securities<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>b) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">$62.17 billion<\/span> was deposited with<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> other central banks and the BIS<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>c) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">$39.79 billion<\/span> comprised <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">deposits with commercial banks overseas<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>ii) A small portion of the reserves is managed by external asset managers to explore new strategies and diversify the portfolio.
