Let me know if you need more information! \ud83d\ude0a\">\n<div class=\"ac-container ac-adaptiveCard has-image\">\n<div class=\"ac-textBlock\">\n<h2>Why in the news?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recently, the Assam government instructed the Border wing of the State\u2019s police not to forward cases of non-Muslims who entered India illegally before 2014 to the Foreigners Tribunals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This aligns with the Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2019, which allows non-Muslims including Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis, Jains, and Buddhists fleeing persecution in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan to apply for citizenship.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">About Foreigners Tribunals (FTs)<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1. Foreigners Tribunals (FTs) are quasi-judicial bodies established under the Foreigners (Tribunals) Order of 1964, which is based on the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Foreigners\u2019 Act of 1946<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2. Their primary purpose is to determine whether a person suspected of being a foreigner is an Indian citizen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3. These tribunals are unique to Assam, as other states <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">handle cases of alleged illegal immigrants<\/span> under the Foreigners\u2019 Act without the use of FTs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>4. Structure and Operation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">i) Each FT is headed by a member who is typically a judge, advocate, or civil servant with judicial experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">ii) According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, there were 300 FTs in Assam as of 2021. However, the State\u2019s Home and Political Department reports that only 100 of these tribunals are currently functioning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>5. Functioning of an FT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">i) An FT operates with <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">powers similar to a civil court in certain matters<\/span>, such as summoning individuals, examining them under oath, and requiring the production of documents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">ii) Upon receiving a reference from the concerned authority, an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">FT must serve a notice to the person suspected of being a foreigner within 10 days<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">iii) The individual then has 10 days to respond to the notice and another 10 days to provide evidence supporting their case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">iv) The tribunal is required to resolve the case <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">within 60 days of the reference<\/span>.
