{"id":30493,"date":"2018-10-26T16:26:36","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T10:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=30493"},"modified":"2018-10-26T16:26:36","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T10:56:36","slug":"a-move-to-equivalence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/a-move-to-equivalence\/","title":{"rendered":"A move to equivalence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/a-move-to-equivalence\/article23295740.ece\"><strong>A move to equivalence<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recent agreement on \u201cmutual recognition of educational qualifications\u201d between India and France<\/li>\n<li>It provides an opportunity for India to refine its policy on higher education by inking such pacts with other countries, thereby seamlessly integrating the Indian student community across the world<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Current policy framework: Problem of Degree Recognition<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dealt on a case-by-case basis: <\/strong>The issue of recognition of academic qualifications is dealt with on a case-by-case basis by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), which provides Indian students with equivalence certificates based on eligibility requirements and the duration of courses<\/li>\n<li><strong>Condition to pursue PhD or JRF-NET<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the current system, if a person has a postgraduate degree from abroad, an equivalence certificate is essential to pursue a PhD or qualify for a career in academia through the Junior Research Fellowship-National Eligibility Test (JRF-NET)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1 year degree holders are ousted from Indian system<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Returnee students from foreign universities need to apply for equivalence certificates, but students who hold one-year degrees from abroad are immediately ousted from the Indian system<\/p>\n<p><strong>Current framework supporting brain drain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This ad hoc arrangement for recognition of degrees has discouraged students from pursuing research careers in India.
