{"id":30578,"date":"2018-10-26T16:49:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T11:19:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=30578"},"modified":"2018-10-26T16:49:53","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T11:19:53","slug":"space-travel-causes-changes-to-genes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/space-travel-causes-changes-to-genes\/","title":{"rendered":"Space travel causes changes to genes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/science\/space-travel-causes-changes-to-genes\/article23264308.ece\"><strong>Space travel causes changes to genes<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s Twins Study brought ten research teams together to accomplish one goal: find out what happens to the human body after spending one year in space<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comparing the data<\/strong><br \/>\nResearch includes data on what happened to Scott Kelly, physiologically and psychologically, while he was in space, and compared the data to Mark Kelly, his brother<\/p>\n<p><strong>Significance: A stepping stone towards long missions to Mars<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NASA knew as to what happens to the body after the standard-duration six-month missions aboard the International Space Station (ISS), but astronaut Scott Kelly\u2019s one-year mission is seen as a stepping stone to a three-year mission to Mars<\/p>\n<p><strong>Observations made<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spaceflight is associated with oxygen deprivation stress, increased inflammation, and dramatic nutrient shifts that affect gene expression<\/li>\n<li>Scott Kelly\u2019s telomeres \u2014 end caps of chromosomes that shorten as one ages \u2014 actually became significantly longer in space. This finding was made in 2017<\/li>\n<li>A new finding is that the majority of those telomeres shortened within two days of Scott\u2019s return to the earth.
