{"id":30610,"date":"2018-10-26T16:57:16","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T11:27:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=30610"},"modified":"2018-10-26T16:57:16","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T11:27:16","slug":"warming-may-threaten-half-of-species-in-33-key-regions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/warming-may-threaten-half-of-species-in-33-key-regions\/","title":{"rendered":"Warming may \u2018threaten\u2019 half of species in 33 key regions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-life\/warming-may-threaten-half-of-species-in-33-key-regions\/article23248718.ece\"><strong>Warming may \u2018threaten\u2019 half of species in 33 key regions<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The analysis commissioned by WWF and published in science journal\u00a0Climatic Change<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was the focus of the report?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The report focused on 33 so-called \u201cPriority Places\u201d which host some of the world\u2019s richest and most unusual terrestrial species, including iconic, endangered, or endemic plants and animals<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They include southern Chile, the eastern Himalayas, South Africa\u2019s unique Fynbos ecoregion, Borneo, Sumatra, the Namibian desert, West Africa, southwest Australia, coastal east Africa, and southern Africa\u2019s Miombo Woodlands, home to African wild dogs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Global warming could place 25 to 50% of species in the Amazon, Madagascar and other biodiverse areas at risk of localised extinction within decades<\/li>\n<li>The lower projection is based on a mercury rise of two degrees Celsius over pre-Industrial Revolution levels \u2014 the warming ceiling the world\u2019s nations agreed on in 2015<\/li>\n<li>The highest is for out-of-control warming of 4.5 Celsius<\/li>\n<li>At warming of 4.5 Celsius, based on a \u201cbusiness-as-usual\u201d scenario of no emissions cuts, the Amazon could risk the local extinction of 69% of its plant species<\/li>\n<li>The Miombo Woodlands risks losing 90% of its amphibians, 86% of birds, and 80% of mammals<\/li>\n<li>Limiting warming to 2 Celsius would enable many species to continue inhabiting the areas they currently occupy and if animals can move freely, not constrained by roads, fences, or human settlements, the proportion of species at risk at warming of 2 Celsius drops from 25 to 20%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Paris agreement might be too less too late<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WWF in a statement has said that even with the emissions cuts pledged under the Paris Agreement, temperatures that were extreme in the past are set to be the new normal in all Priority Places<\/p>\n<p>The report comes ahead of a major meeting of the IPBES inter-governmental panel in Medellin, Colombia, where scientists and governments will release five assessments of the state of biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services<\/strong><strong>\u00a0(IPBES)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an independent\u00a0intergovernmental body\u00a0established to strengthen the science-policy interface for\u00a0biodiversity\u00a0and\u00a0ecosystem services\u00a0for the\u00a0conservation\u00a0and\u00a0sustainable use\u00a0of\u00a0biodiversity, long-term human\u00a0well-being\u00a0and\u00a0sustainable development<\/li>\n<li>IPBES is placed under the auspices of four United Nations entities: UNEP, UNESCO, FAO and UNDP and administered by UNEP<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>HQ<\/u><\/strong>: Bonn, Germany<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Warming may \u2018threaten\u2019 half of species in 33 key regions Context The analysis commissioned by WWF and published in science journal\u00a0Climatic Change What was the focus of the report?
