It is the second most important greenhouse gas, having 26 times more global warming potential compared to carbon-di-oxide.<\/p>\n<p>Wetlands, ruminants, rice fields, landfills are sources of methane. The organisms that produce methane are called <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">methanogens<\/span>. It has an <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">oval and elongated shape<\/span>, resembling a cucumber, which led to its nickname \u2018<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">methane-eating cucumbers<\/span>.\u2019<br \/>\n2. Methylocucumis oryzae is a<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> Gram-negative bacterium.<\/span> It exhibits a rod-shaped morphology and forms colonies that can be distinguished based on their unique characteristics under specific growth conditions.<br \/>\n3. Methylocucumis oryzae <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">oxidizes methane using methane monooxygenase (MMO),<\/span> converting methane to methanol, which is then processed to formaldehyde, formate, and carbon dioxide.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 95px\">\n<td style=\"width: 19.1177%;height: 95px\">Habitat<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 80.8823%;height: 95px\">These methanotrophs are found in environments where methane and oxygen both are available. <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Wetlands<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">rice fields<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">ponds<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">other water bodies<\/span> are the common habitats.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 150px\">\n<td style=\"width: 19.1177%;height: 150px\">Environmental role<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 80.8823%;height: 150px\">1. M. oryzae contributes to the <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">global carbon cycle<\/span> by reducing methane levels in the atmosphere.<br \/>\n2. In rice paddies, these bacteria help to balance the methane thereby reducing the overall greenhouse gas emissions from these agricultural systems.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Applications<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. Agricultural Impact<\/strong>:\u00a0 By promoting conditions that favor the growth of such methanotrophs, methane emissions from rice paddies can be minimized.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Bioremediation<\/strong>: M. oryzae and other methanotrophs are being studied for their potential in bioremediation. Their ability to oxidize methane and other hydrocarbons makes them useful for cleaning up contaminated environments, including soil and water polluted with organic compounds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Biotechnology<\/strong>: The metabolic pathways of M. oryzae could be engineered to improve the efficiency of methane conversion processes, leading to sustainable energy solutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Constraints in widespread Usage-<\/strong> The current constraint with widespread use of\u00a0 Methylocucumis oryzae is its slow growth.
