Why in News?<\/h2>\n

Recently, NWMI issued new guidelines to promote equity in newsrooms.<\/p>\n

About the guidelines:<\/h2>\n

1. NWMI has released guidelines to improve workplace conditions in newsrooms across India.<\/p>\n

2. It focuses on ensuring safety, equity, and protection of journalists’ rights.<\/p>\n

3. It identified common Issues such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n

i) Widespread workplace humiliation and harassment.<\/p>\n

ii) Tolerance of abusive behavior from senior staff, often excused by past experiences.<\/p>\n

iii) Disparaging comments based on personal attributes like caste, gender, and sexuality.<\/p>\n

iv) Women and LGBTQIA+ individuals often face the most severe attacks.<\/p>\n

4. Work Hours and Overtime: <\/strong><\/p>\n

i) Adherence to the Occupational Safety, Health, and Working Conditions Code, 2020 is emphasized.<\/p>\n

ii) Journalists should work no more than 144 hours over four consecutive weeks. A mandatory day off each week.<\/p>\n

iii)\u00a0 Overtime should be recognized for any work beyond the specified limit.<\/p>\n

5. Salary and Leave Recommendations:<\/strong><\/p>\n

i)\u00a0 Ensure fair and regular salaries for all employees.<\/p>\n

ii) Provide a minimum of 30 days of paid leave annually, covering earned leave, casual leave, sick leave, festival leave.<\/p>\n

iii) Include health-related leave, such as mental health and menstrual leave.<\/p>\n

iv) Comply with legal provisions for maternity, paternity, and childcare leave.<\/p>\n

6. Human Resources and Grievance Redressal:<\/strong><\/p>\n

i) Establish independent, professional Human Resources departments.<\/p>\n

ii)\u00a0 Set up internal committees to address sexual harassment, as legally required.<\/p>\n

iii)\u00a0 Implement grievance redressal mechanisms to handle toxic behavior complaints.<\/p>\n

iv) Ensure confidentiality in grievance processes with neutral fact-finding procedures.<\/p>\n

v) Enforce a zero-tolerance policy for toxic behavior, with disciplinary action against violators, regardless of position or popularity.<\/p>\n
