{"id":30808,"date":"2018-10-26T18:19:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T12:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=30808"},"modified":"2018-10-26T18:19:00","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T12:49:00","slug":"india-to-join-multilateral-lender-ebrd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-to-join-multilateral-lender-ebrd\/","title":{"rendered":"India to join multilateral lender EBRD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/business\/Economy\/india-to-join-multilateral-lender-ebrd\/article22951712.ece\"><b>India to join multilateral lender EBRD<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India to join multilateral lender EBRD<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Introduction:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Bank of Reconstruction and Development shareholders approve its entry as 69th member.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EBRD\u2019s board of governors, which represents all the existing shareholders of the UK-based bank, voted in favour of India\u2019s membership application last week<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Significance of this decision:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an important step in the relationship between the EBRD and India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will allow the EBRD to build on already close ties with India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move will enable Indian companies to undertake joint investments in regions in which the EBRD operates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move will see India take up a small stake in the bank, would spur further investment by Indian firms in a range of sectors from solar to utilities, providing them access to fast growing markets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will also enable Indian citizens to work for the organisation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>European Bank of Reconstruction and Development<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The London-headquartered EBRD is a multilateral development bank set up in 1991 after the fall of the Berlin wall to promote private and entrepreneurial initiative in emerging Europe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It invests in 38 emerging economies across three continents, according to a set of criteria that aim to make its countries more competitive, better governed, greener, more inclusive, more resilient and more integrated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It remains committed to furthering the development of \u201cmarket-oriented economies and the promotion of private and entrepreneurial initiative.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other members who receive investments include Mongolia, Turkey, Egypt, Cyprus, Greece and Lebanon, among a total of 38 member states.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others including China, the U.S., U.K., and France are stakeholders, whose companies are able to invest in EBRD projects, but do not receive financing for domestic projects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EBRD\u2019s largest shareholder is currently the U.S., while other G7 nations also hold significant stakes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, the EBRD signed a pact with the International Solar Alliance, which was unveiled in 2015 in Paris.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>India to join multilateral lender EBRD Context: India to join multilateral lender EBRD Introduction: European Bank of Reconstruction and Development shareholders approve its entry as 69th member.
