{"id":30863,"date":"2018-10-27T11:11:01","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T05:41:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=30863"},"modified":"2018-10-27T11:11:01","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T05:41:01","slug":"myanmar-puts-off-border-pact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/myanmar-puts-off-border-pact\/","title":{"rendered":"Myanmar puts off border pact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/myanmar-puts-off-border-pact\/article22927068.ece\"><b>Myanmar puts off border pact<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myanmar has asked India for more time before the agreement to streamline the free movement of people within 16 km along the border is sealed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Background:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On January 3, 2018 the Union Cabinet had approved an <\/span><b>agreement between India and Myanmar on land border crossing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to enhance economic interaction between people of the two countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To give it shape, the Centre had asked four States \u2014 <\/span><b>Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that share the unfenced border with Myanmar to distribute \u201cborder pass\u201d to all the residents living within 16 km from the border.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the <\/span><b>Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been deferred by Myanmar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> twice in the past seven months.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India tried to again push the agreement in January when Myanmar\u2019s State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi was in New Delhi with nine ASEAN leaders as chief guest for the Republic Day parade.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Reason for Myanmar\u2019s reluctance:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myanmar is reluctant to sign the agreement due to <\/span><b>domestic compulsions.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They fear that if they sign the pact, the<\/span><b> international agreement will have to be adhered to.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Provision of the proposal:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per the proposal, there would have been <\/span><b>no restrictions on the movement of people across the borders.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The domiciles were to be <\/span><b>allotted border passes and those going across for agriculture, work or to meet relatives should carry the pass at all times.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Key fact:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India and Myanmar share a 1,643 km unfenced border along Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Nagaland (215 km), Manipur (398 km) and Mizoram (510 km) and permit a \u2018free movement\u2019 regime upto 16 km beyond the border.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Myanmar puts off border pact Context: Myanmar has asked India for more time before the agreement to streamline the free movement of people within 16 km along the border is sealed.
