A 7 Judge Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court has <strong>allowed the States to sub-classify the SC and ST communities<\/strong>. The Apex Court has thus overturned its 2004 Judgment when it had held that all SCs must be treated identically. The Judgment has opened ground for States to <strong>better target the benefits of reservation<\/strong> <strong>towards the most disadvantaged communities<\/strong> among the SCs\/STs. However, the Supreme Court has given a caveat that the <strong>reservation must be based on quantifiable and demonstrable data<\/strong> and the <strong>affirmative action policies must be empirically determined<\/strong>.
