{"id":30944,"date":"2018-10-27T11:32:32","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:02:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=30944"},"modified":"2018-10-27T11:32:32","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:02:32","slug":"cornered-by-the-quad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/cornered-by-the-quad\/","title":{"rendered":"Cornered by the Quad?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/cornered-by-the-quad\/article22870625.ece\"><b>Cornered by the Quad?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The four Quad countries, Australia, India, Japan and the U.S., pushing back the China\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and are working to establish a joint regional infrastructure scheme as an alternative to the same<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Challenging China:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a pet project of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the BRI is aimed at situating Beijing at the core of the global economy by building global transport links across the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China with its BRI is providing a new economic template to the world, and it is important for those powers which view Beijing\u2019s approach as top-down, opaque and self serving to pro-actively provide credible alternatives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scale and scope of the Chinese economic footprint can only be tackled if the Quad nations combine forces.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the military option, this is a softer side of the \u201cQuad\u201d engagement and its members are already undertaking connectivity projects around the world. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India and Japan, for example, are working on an ambitious Asia-Africa Growth Corridor linking Southeast Asia to Africa.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Pushing back BRI:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest concern about the BRI is that it is a <\/span><b>means of Chinese economic hegemony<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, in the process, it <\/span><b>challenges the foundations of the existing liberal economic order.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While underlining their support for the need for global and regional connectivity in principle, <\/span><b>the Quad members have been pushing back.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>India\u2019s opposition has been the strongest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> partly because the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is a part of the BRI, passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. India was the only major power which did not attend the BRI summit hosted by China last May.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Japan has laid down specific conditions for its participation in the BRI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even as it is looking to use its official development assistance to promote a broader <\/span><b>\u201cFree and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy\u201d including \u201chigh-quality infrastructure\u201d.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Australia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has challenged the principles which frame the BRI.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beijing has already expressed its unhappiness at the emergence of the \u201cQuad\u201d and will see moves to counter the BRI as an attempt to shift the balance of power in the wider Indo-Pacific.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s worries will only increase as the combined might of these four powers is quite formidable.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cornered by the Quad?
