Agro-meteorological advisories <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">provide farmers with weather-based guidance<\/span> to help them make better decisions for farming.<\/p>\n<p>2. This is done through <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">District Agro-Meteorology Units (DAMUs)<\/span> which are specialized units established to provide <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">localized weather-based agricultural advisories<\/span> to farmers.<\/p>\n<p>2. DAMUs uses <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">weather data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD)<\/span>, such as rainfall, temperature, and wind speeds.<\/p>\n<p>3. Based on IMD data, they help farmers decide <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">when to sow, harvest, apply fertilizers and pesticides, and plan irrigation<\/span>. The advisories were <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">shared via text messages, WhatsApp groups, newspapers, and in-person communication<\/span> by DAMU staff and KVK officers.<\/p>\n<h2>About District Agro-Meteorology Units (DAMUs)<\/h2>\n<p>1. DAMUs were set up <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">under the Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa (GKMS) scheme<\/span> by the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> India Meteorological Department (IMD)<\/span> in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2018.<\/span> DAMUs were <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">located at Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs)<\/span> and staffed by experts in meteorology and agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 They <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">provided local weather data<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">advice to farmers<\/span> at the district and block levels.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0They <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">sent free advisories<\/span> to farmers through <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">SMS, WhatsApp, newspapers, and face-to-face communication.<\/span> These advisories helped farmers plan farming activities and avoid losses due to bad weather.<\/p>\n<h2>Impact of Agro-Met Schemes<\/h2>\n<p>1. DAMUs helped i<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">mprove the adaptability of farmers to climatic variations,<\/span> resulting in higher yields and better incomes.<\/p>\n<p>2. By providing localized and easily accessible advisories, the agro-met offices played a critical role in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ensuring farmers were better prepared for climate change impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Challenges associated with DAMU<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. Shutdown of DAMUs: <\/strong>In March 2024, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">DAMUs were shut down by the IMD<\/span>. NITI Aayog suggested using automated systems and privatizing the service, raising concerns as private services are often too expensive for small farmers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.
