{"id":30993,"date":"2018-10-27T11:42:58","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:12:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=30993"},"modified":"2018-10-27T11:42:58","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:12:58","slug":"justin-trudeaus-discovery-of-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/justin-trudeaus-discovery-of-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Justin Trudeau\u2019s discovery of India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/justin-trudeaus-discovery-of-india\/article22853475.ece\"><b>Justin Trudeau\u2019s discovery of India<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tried hard to expand his understanding of India and foster closer India-Canada relations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Khalistan controversy:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Canadian delegation should have avoided the controversy concerning the Khalistan movement, but it was self-inflicted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It stemmed from the ruling Liberal Party\u2019s soft approach on extremist and separatist activities in Canada.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its quest for votes of sections of the Sikh community in Canada, India\u2019s basic interests were surprisingly given short shrift by the Liberals.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Important agreements signed:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the Indian viewpoint, the most important agreement signed during the visit is the \u201c<\/span><b>Framework for Cooperation between India and Canada on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism\u201d.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It commits the two nations to combating this phenomenon in all its \u201cforms and manifestations\u201d, and to facilitate \u201ceffective cooperation\u201d on security, finance, justice, law enforcement and operations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through further interaction, New Delhi is certain to ensure and monitor closely that <\/span><b>Ottawa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> delivers on this commitment. Progress in this realm will spur positivity in other domains of mutual cooperation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Regional, bilateral issues<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two leaders called for dismantling the <\/span><b>infrastructure of support to terrorism \u201cfrom across borders of Afghanistan\u201d, a clear reference to Pakistan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Maldives government was urged <\/span><b>\u201cto ensure early resumption of the political process.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Myanmar, <\/span><b>the need for voluntary, safe and sustainable return of the Rohingya refugees was stressed.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada and India showed a common perspective on <\/span><b>freedom of navigation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>over-flight \u201cthroughout the Indo-Pacific region\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>respect for international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada implicitly shared India\u2019s reservations on <\/span><b>China\u2019s mega Belt and Road Initiative.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two sides agreed on their analysis of the situation in the <\/span><b>Korean Peninsula<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They considered peacekeeping as \u201can effective response to global challenges\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr. Trudeau extended strong support for India\u2019s membership of the <\/span><b>Nuclear Suppliers Group.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Five Es:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A business leader saw India-Canada cooperation anchored on five Es: <\/span><b>economy, energy, education, entertainment industry linkages, and empowerment<\/b> <b>of women.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progress on two government-level agreements, one on investment and the other on trade was minimal as expected, but the two leaders directed officials to intensify their negotiations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Other areas:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s need for continued uranium exports from Canada and for state-of-art technologies relating to clean energy and renewables came through vividly in discussions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision to expand the scope of <\/span><b>Ministerial Energy Dialogue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0also took place.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New <\/span><b>Canada-India Track 1.5 Dialogue on Innovation, Growth and Prosperity was launched.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This aims to establish contours of convergence through sustained research and brainstorming among experts, officials and business people.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India-Canada bilateral relationship<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two sides had forged close cooperation on energy and trade, including a civil nuclear cooperation agreement and a commitment from Canadian pension funds to invest in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India and Canada have much in common as two pluralistic, diverse democracies with very strong people-to-people ties: there is an Indian diaspora of 1.3 million in Canada, besides 100,000 Indian students.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Way ahead:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a capital, technology and innovation-rich economy and an open, inclusive and multi-cultural society, Canada is highly relevant to India. It is sharpening its role as a Pacific Ocean power. India\u2019s commitment to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific should deepen geopolitical affinity. Thus mutual interests are likely to impel the two nations to strengthen their strategic partnership.
