{"id":31032,"date":"2018-10-27T11:54:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31032"},"modified":"2018-10-27T11:54:10","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:24:10","slug":"grid-stability-is-key","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/grid-stability-is-key\/","title":{"rendered":"Grid stability is key"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/grid-stability-is-key\/article22840467.ece\"><b>Grid stability is key<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of transmitting electricity to the farmers, the government, to start with, wants farmers to use <\/span><b>solar energy to power their irrigation pumps.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is in news?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the January 2018 report of the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, there are about <\/span><b>142,000 solar pumps in India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government is planning to install <\/span><b>one million solar pumps by 2021.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (KUSUM):<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Union Budget 2018 has allocated close to <\/span><b>Rs. 48,000 crore to set up the Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (KUSUM).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This programme will help set up <\/span><b>more than 28 GW of combined solar capacity through these solar pumps.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government plans to purchase the surplus power through <\/span><b>electricity distribution companies.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This proposal will almost certainly <\/span><b>increase agricultural incomes and reduce electricity losses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when transmitting power to remote rural areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The advantage of this scheme is that transmission losses and power theft would drop significantly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The feasibility of purchasing surplus solar power seems problematic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a need to address the issue of grid stability that this injection of surplus power is bound to create.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Loss of rural retailers of power:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most rural retailers of power also lose money as they <\/span><b>sell power at a subsidised rate to the poor and the farm sector.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>state-run distribution companies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were thus running a loss of <\/span><b>Rs. 4.3 trillion as of September 2015.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Local generation of power<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the manner proposed would take care of the above issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Balancing of power grids:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All power grids <\/span><b>require balancing.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This balancing entails meeting the demand with adequate <\/span><b>supply 24&#215;7 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to ensure there is no blackout.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason for striking this balance is that <\/span><b>electrical energy cannot readily be stored,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meaning that power generation ought to work round the clock.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These electrical gridlines were created to depend <\/span><b>on reliable and controllable generators (coal, oil and even hydroelectric).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, with more and more power being generated through fluctuating power generators (solar and wind), a <\/span><b>more precise balance will have to be created, which may cause more failures.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Way ahead:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is short of power;
