{"id":31053,"date":"2018-10-27T11:57:21","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:27:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31053"},"modified":"2018-10-27T11:57:21","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:27:21","slug":"game-changer-in-quiet-villages-of-solapur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/game-changer-in-quiet-villages-of-solapur\/","title":{"rendered":"Game-changer in quiet villages of Solapur"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/other-states\/game-changer-in-quiet-villages-of-solapur\/article22829382.ece\"><b>Game-changer in quiet villages of Solapur<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not before less than two years that woman in Waluj village of Mohol Taluka in Solapur district, 400 km from Mumbai, knew what a gram sabha was.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The turning point:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the onset of 2017 summer, over 50 women marched to the gram sabha <\/span><b>demanding job cards so they could get work under the Employment Guarantee Scheme.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The women also pressured the gram panchayat to <\/span><b>provide filtered water to all the households in the village.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gram panchayat had never seen such collective activism before and within a month, <\/span><b>all 50 protesters received job cards.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The women <\/span><b>formed self help groups (SHGs) under Umed, a State-led initiative under the Maharashtra State Rural Livelihood Mission (SRLM), which in turn is part of National Rural Livelihood Mission.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The programme aims to empower women by <\/span><b>engaging them in innovative agricultural practices and giving them a steady source of income.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government officials at the village and block level mobilise women to <\/span><b>avail of finance for their homes, farms or even small businesses. <\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women began to cultivate over <\/span><b>20 types of produce, including vegetables, cereals, pulses and fruits.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women have started an <\/span><b>information<\/b> <b>centre<\/b> <b>at<\/b> <b>the<\/b> <b>village<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where organic farming techniques are taught to everybody who visits it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They \u00a0now work along with the <\/span><b>local gram panchayat, whose members guide farmers to visit the information centre to learn about organic farming.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Game-changer in quiet villages of Solapur Context: It is not before less than two years that woman in Waluj village of Mohol Taluka in Solapur district, 400 km from Mumbai, knew what a gram sabha was.
