{"id":31055,"date":"2018-10-27T11:58:15","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:28:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31055"},"modified":"2018-10-27T11:58:15","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:28:15","slug":"talk-like-a-south-asian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/talk-like-a-south-asian\/","title":{"rendered":"Talk like a South Asian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/talk-like-a-south-asian\/article22830115.ece\"><b>Talk like a South Asian<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watching South Asia, one senses India lacks of a sense of neighbourhood and region as a component of our imagination.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Explanation:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The similarities between India and Nepal are immense, and yet India lacks any comprehension of Nepal\u2019s fierce sense of itself.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India repeatedly displays a lack of sense of the diversities around which need a new sense of unity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It issues warnings to the Maldives or Nepal, threatening them not to be seduced by the Chinese imperative, but it does little to sustain the reciprocity and autonomy of the relationship.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Time for renewal:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the South Asian context, India must start inventing and reinventing the neighbour every day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Firstly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it has to invent a South Asia which is civilisational, reciprocal, local in its diversity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most exciting of these regional ideas was the creation of the South Asian University (SAU), with a faculty from all South Asian countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What India lacks is a South Asian theory of culture and knowledge which should anchor this imagination.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Secondly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the availability of eccentricity as dissent, alternatives, minorities has to be reworked constitutionally so the focus is not on trite obsessions with India-Pakistan but a genuine exploration of voices and theories.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Thirdly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> diversity becomes the next axis of the South Asia imagination.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One has to allow for tribal, ethnic, nomadic and pastoral groups moving freely without being hounded by the panopticon called the boundary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Fourthly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India needs a movement from muscular diplomacy, which we are poor at.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Democracy in India cannot exist without the extension of the democratic imagination to the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Talk like a South Asian Context: Watching South Asia, one senses India lacks of a sense of neighbourhood and region as a component of our imagination.
