{"id":31114,"date":"2018-10-27T12:10:51","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31114"},"modified":"2018-10-27T12:10:51","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:40:51","slug":"maldives-on-a-collision-course-with-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/maldives-on-a-collision-course-with-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Maldives on a collision course with India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/maldives-on-a-collision-course-with-india\/article22808607.ece\"><b>Maldives on a collision course with India<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When India had sent a message asking the government not to extend the state of emergency, the Maldives has set for a collision course with India, as a parliamentary committee voted to extend the state of emergency by 30 days, defying India\u2019s expectation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Emergency rule defying the Supreme Court order:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the president of yameen had declared emergency rule on February 5, for 15 days, after <\/span><b>defying the Supreme Court order.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Opposition termed the move <\/span><b>illegal.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Illegal Extension of state of emergency:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government can\u2019t extend the state of emergency legally, because it <\/span><b>does not have the 43 legislators in the Majlis (Parliament) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that must vote in favour of it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Constitution states that <\/span><b>43 MPs must be present during a vote on a matter of public compliance <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a state of emergency is a matter of public compliance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Implement SC ruling:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is yet to indicate its strategy in responding to the ongoing <\/span><b>political and constitutional crisis <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in its neighbourhood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has reiterated its position and urged <\/span><b>Male to implement the SC ruling.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Way ahead:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important that Maldives quickly <\/span><b>returns to the<\/b> <b>path of democracy and the rule of law<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maldives on a collision course with India Context: When India had sent a message asking the government not to extend the state of emergency, the Maldives has set for a collision course with India, as a parliamentary committee voted to extend the state of emergency by 30 days, defying India\u2019s expectation.
