Recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed three new bills to combat deepfakes in political campaigns.<\/p>\n

About the legislation<\/h2>\n

1. Aim:<\/strong> This legislation aims to safeguard the integrity of elections and protect voters from being misled by manipulated media, particularly deepfake content.<\/p>\n

This legislation also intent to curb the deceptive use of AI in political ads and election-related content to prevent the erosion of trust in democratic processes.<\/p>\n

2. Objective:<\/strong>\u00a0 It seeks to hold online platforms accountable and ensure they can prevent the distribution of misleading content that can influence voters.<\/p>\n

AB 2655 – Defending Democracy from Deepfake Deception Act of 2024<\/td>\nLarge online platforms must block or label deceptive deepfake content about elections during specific periods before and after elections. Satire or parody is exempt from these restriction.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
AB 2839 – Elections: Deceptive Media in Advertisements<\/td>\nThis extends the prohibition period for distributing AI-generated or manipulated election ads with deceptive content, empowering authorities to take legal action against distributors.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
AB 2355 – Political Reform Act of 1974: Political Advertisements: Artificial Intelligence<\/td>\nThis requires political ads with AI-generated or altered content to clearly disclose this fact with a label like, “Ad generated or substantially altered using artificial intelligence.”<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
