{"id":31144,"date":"2018-10-27T12:15:46","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:45:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31144"},"modified":"2018-10-27T12:15:46","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:45:46","slug":"the-politics-of-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-politics-of-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"The politics of AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/lead\/the-politics-of-ai\/article22809400.ece\"><b>The politics of AI<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Artificial Intelligence that can match human intelligence in all respects is unlikely because it is <\/span><b>impossible for AI technology to replicate that which makes human intelligence what it is.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Worldwide spending on AI solutions:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Data Corporation, the market intelligence agency, estimates that <\/span><b>worldwide spending on AI solutions will grow to $57.6 billion by 2021.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lion\u2019s share of the investments is being made by the Big Five: Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Financialization and globalization and digitization:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capitalism faced a crisis of profitability in the 1970s.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opinions differ regarding its causes, but the global elite had no doubts about the solution: <\/span><b>financialisation and globalisation.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Also known as the <\/span><b>\u201cneo-liberal turn\u201d,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it helped solve the problem of falling rates of profit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If financialisation and globalisation made it possible for corporates to tap into markets anywhere in the world, digitalisation gave them the means to do so.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Uber<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the perfect example of what capitalism wants to be when financialisation, globalisation, and digitalisation come together.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Platform Capitalism:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Platform Capitalism <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a business structured as platforms that are digital equivalent of oil rigs, ideally placed to mine the networked economy\u2019s most valuable resource by <\/span><b>inserting themselves between different sets of users, turning every interaction into a data point, and feeding it all into an algorithm.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Platform businesses leverage their ability to <\/span><b>scale-up the digitisation of a given activity to quickly build monopolies that, in turn, boost their ability to collect more data.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AI foregrounds two inter-related issues that citizens must consider carefully: <\/span><b>data ownership and labour protection.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>So, contrary to neoclassical economic wisdom, AI cannot sever the link between labour and economic value, though it does substitute dead labour (capital) for living labour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The politics of AI Context: An Artificial Intelligence that can match human intelligence in all respects is unlikely because it is impossible for AI technology to replicate that which makes human intelligence what it is.
