{"id":31148,"date":"2018-10-27T12:20:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31148"},"modified":"2018-10-27T12:20:00","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:50:00","slug":"a-nepal-india-win-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/a-nepal-india-win-win\/","title":{"rendered":"A Nepal-India win-win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/lead\/a-nepal-india-win-win\/article22800673.ece\"><b>A Nepal-India win-win<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli sworn as Prime Minster of Nepal, he is tasked today to <\/span><b>reset the relationship with India at a new normal.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Background<\/b><b>:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India became progressively interventionist as Nepal got engaged in<\/span><b> internal crisis during and after the Maoist \u2018people\u2019s war\u2019, and as the hill-plain polarisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> escalated during the constitution-writing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are numerous <\/span><b>domestic factors, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a key reason for political instability in Nepal has been <\/span><b>India\u2019s overt and covert intercessions.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Indian analysts <\/span><b>fail to appreciate how political stability in Nepal can deliver economic bounty to the bordering Indian States <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on its three sides.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>A fresh start for India-Nepal:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tagging the Prime Minister of Nepal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as \u2018anti-Indian\u2019 is not sensible, for being \u2018pro-Nepal\u2019 does not <\/span><b>ipso facto mean animosity towards India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And India may be surprised to find that Nepal is more than willing to <\/span><b>reciprocate its overtures, providing reassurance that Kathmandu will never act against India\u2019s security interests.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The central socio-political task is to ensure <\/span><b>inclusion in governance, giving the Janjati ethnicities as well as the Madhesi plains people and others a feeling of ownership of the state.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While seeking to restore Nepal\u2019s position internationally, the Prime Minster has to implement the <\/span><b>connectivity agreements he signed with Beijing in 2015, while lifting the relationship with India above the patron-supplicant status.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime Minster Mr. Oli\u2019s primary preoccupation will be <\/span><b>managing the government\u2019s relationship with the opposition.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He must reach out to build a working relationship with the <\/span><b>NC and the Madhesbaadi plains-based parties,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also because hundreds of <\/span><b>new laws need to be urgently drafted under the Constitution.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He will have his hands full trying to <\/span><b>raise employment through tourism, industry, agroforestry and agriculture, ensuring energy self-sufficiency through hydro projects and rescuing the post-earthquake reconstruction effort.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Prime Minister\u2019s immediate challenge, however, has to do with <\/span><b>Pushpa Kamal Dahal (\u2018Prachanda\u2019), his Maoist partner in the Left Alliance.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Nepal-India win-win Context: With the Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli sworn as Prime Minster of Nepal, he is tasked today to reset the relationship with India at a new normal.
