{"id":31160,"date":"2018-10-27T12:24:45","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:54:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31160"},"modified":"2018-10-27T12:24:45","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:54:45","slug":"bank-bureau-stares-at-uncertain-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/bank-bureau-stares-at-uncertain-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Bank bureau stares at uncertain future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/business\/Industry\/bank-bureau-stares-at-uncertain-future\/article22800081.ece\"><b>Bank bureau stares at uncertain future<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Banks Board Bureau (BBB) is facing an <\/span><b>uncertain future with the tenure of its members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coming to an end on March 31, 2018.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Banks Board Bureau (BBB):<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Banks Board Bureau (BBB) was set up in <\/span><b>April 2016, under the government\u2019s Indradanush programme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reform public sector banks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BBB was seen as a step taken towards <\/span><b>reforming the boards of public sector banks.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term of all the members will come to end <\/span><b>on 31 March, 2018.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government is <\/span><b>yet to communicate if the terms will be extended or a new board will be formed.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Loopholes in the management of BBB:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government was supposed to <\/span><b>distance itself from the appointment process of top management and board members of PSBs.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a function that could be <\/span><b>performed by the BBB.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in practise, the <\/span><b>BBB was involved in shortlisting and interviewing candidates \u2014 the final appointment was always made by the government.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were instances of <\/span><b>delays in appointment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the government despite the BBB recommending it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue of governance and role of the board in public sector banks came to the fore again after the \u20b911,500 crore <\/span><b>PNB scam broke out.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bank bureau stares at uncertain future Context: The Banks Board Bureau (BBB) is facing an uncertain future with the tenure of its members coming to an end on March 31, 2018.
