{"id":31195,"date":"2018-10-27T12:29:19","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:59:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31195"},"modified":"2018-10-27T12:29:19","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T06:59:19","slug":"myanmar-dam-on-border-worries-manipur-village","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/myanmar-dam-on-border-worries-manipur-village\/","title":{"rendered":"Myanmar dam on border worries Manipur village"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/other-states\/myanmar-dam-on-border-worries-manipur-village\/article22791622.ece\"><b>Myanmar dam on border worries Manipur village<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dam being constructed by Myanmar across a river close to the boundary becomes a reason of concern among border villagers in Kengjoi subdivison of Manipur\u2019s Chandel district.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is the issue?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The topography of the area is such that the<\/span><b> immediate villages will be submerged <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if the dam comes up.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, the villagers, dependent on the river, are <\/span><b>already facing water scarcity.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This project will also have huge <\/span><b>negative social, cultural and economic impact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the residents of Khangtung and other Indian villages.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Other controversial dam projects: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June 2015, a tribal village named Chadong in Ukhrul district was submerged by the<\/span><b> Mapithel dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on river Thoubal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Khuga dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> south of Manipur\u2019s Churachandpur town has hit turbulence too.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Controversy has also dogged <\/span><b>Tipaimukh, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the mega hydroelectric project proposed on river Barak in Manipur 35 years ago.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least three anti-dam organisations in Manipur and downstream Assam have been protesting the Tipaimukh project to be built by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from large-scale submergence, they fear ecological degradation if the dam is built.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Tuidimjang dam:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dam, called Tuidimjang, is on the Twigem river flowing into Myanmar from Manipur.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khangtung, inhabited by the Thadou tribe, is 137 km south of Manipur capital Imphal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Myanmar dam on border worries Manipur village Context: A dam being constructed by Myanmar across a river close to the boundary becomes a reason of concern among border villagers in Kengjoi subdivison of Manipur\u2019s Chandel district.
