{"id":31272,"date":"2018-10-27T12:54:46","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:24:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31272"},"modified":"2018-10-27T12:54:46","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:24:46","slug":"rouhani-visit-signals-balance-in-ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/rouhani-visit-signals-balance-in-ties\/","title":{"rendered":"Rouhani visit signals balance in ties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/rouhani-visit-signals-balance-in-ties\/article22754943.ece\"><b>Rouhani visit signals balance in ties<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will visit India from February 15 to 17.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His visit just came after Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Iran\u2019s biggest rival, made a historic visit.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Purpose of visit:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His visit will send out a message that India aims for balance in its ties in the neighbourhood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr. Rouhani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will seek to iron out issues on trade, connectivity, banking and energy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the sides would review the progress achieved in bilateral relations and also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s oil imports from Iran, which had plummeted to new lows last year, will go up this year, because of \u201cbetter terms from Iran\u201d, which is anticipating possible new sanctions being imposed by the Trump administration.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Importance of Iran for India:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iran is not only important for India\u2019s energy needs but also its only route for access to Central Asia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Expected projects:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Port project<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the subjects expected to be discussed are the progress of the <\/span><b>$500-million Beheshti port project in Chabahar, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where India is expected to complete development of berths later this year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is already routing a consignment of 1.1 million tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan through the existing facilities at Chabahar.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Banking trade:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On bilateral trade, the biggest stumbling block is banking channels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two sides are now discussing the possibility of a \u201crupee-rial mechanism\u201d, in addition to the current channel through UCO Bank for rupee payments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, European banks have refused to support the trade, given the uncertainty over fresh sanctions from the U.S.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Other issues:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another issue is the pending negotiations over the Farzad-B gas and oil fields that India has expressed its interest in.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>FATF meeting:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iran is likely to seek India\u2019s support at the upcoming meeting of the UN\u2019s Financial Action Task Force, where Tehran is hoping to exit a blacklist on money laundering and terror finance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India hopes to see Pakistan put on a \u201cgrey-list\u201d at the meeting.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rouhani visit signals balance in ties Context: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will visit India from February 15 to 17.
