{"id":31319,"date":"2018-10-27T13:06:58","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:36:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31319"},"modified":"2018-10-27T13:06:58","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:36:58","slug":"the-danger-of-counterfactuals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-danger-of-counterfactuals\/","title":{"rendered":"The danger of counterfactuals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/must-read-news-articles-february-14-2018\/v\"><b>The danger of counterfactuals<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alleging that the Congress was responsible for the partition of the country, and for the division of Jammu and Kashmir is to distort a very complex history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What has happened?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, Prime Minister Modi has blamed Congress for the disasters that track Indians since 1947.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the troubling allegations has been that the Congress was responsible for the partition of the country, and for the division of Jammu and Kashmir.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Different Viewpoints about the Partition<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partition is one of the most debated issues among historians.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most scholars agree that the causes of Partition can be traced to the turn of the 19th century. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The politicisation of religious identities was one of the important causes.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colonial policies gave an added fillip to this politicisation through group representation. By early 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century this led to communal violence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another group of historians focuses on the role of elites in the making of independent nation states. Elites proceeded to tap religious identities, forge a constituency, and mobilise struggles for independence and for a separate state. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it is very difficult to discern one reason for the Partition.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Partition teaches us that the politicisation of religious identities can be dangerous.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This inevitably lead to devastation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, till today, communal organisations continue to trigger the brutalisation of social and political identities and creation of divides<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The danger of counterfactuals Context: Alleging that the Congress was responsible for the partition of the country, and for the division of Jammu and Kashmir is to distort a very complex history.
