{"id":31349,"date":"2018-10-27T13:14:34","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:44:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31349"},"modified":"2018-10-27T13:14:34","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:44:34","slug":"india-records-marginal-increase-in-forest-cover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-records-marginal-increase-in-forest-cover\/","title":{"rendered":"India records marginal increase in forest cover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/india-records-marginal-increase-in-forest-cover\/article22735851.ece\"><b>India records marginal increase in forest cover<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the biennial India State of Forest Report (SFR) 2017, India has recorded a marginal increase in forest cover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Findings of the Survey:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Survey, India has about 7, 08,273 square kilometres of forest, which is 21.53% of the geographic area of the country (32, 87,569 sq. km).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The category of \u2018very dense forest\u2019 saw a dramatic rise from 85,904 square kilometres to 98,158 square kilometres in 2017.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the category of \u2018moderately dense forest\u2019 (40%-70%) saw a 7,056 square kilometre-decline from 2015.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey has found that India\u2019s bamboo bearing area rose by 1.73 million hectares (2011) to 15.69 million hectares (2017).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, the government ceased to define bamboo as a tree to promote economic activity among tribals.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 States and union territories have 33% of their geographical area under forests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala have topped the States that posted an increase in forest cover.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of this increase can be attributed to plantation and conservation activities both within and outside the Recorded Forest areas as well as an improvement in interpretation of satellite data.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in North-east India, forest cover has shown a decrease.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, 65.34%, of the geographical area was under forest in the north-east- a 630 square kilometre decline from the 2015 survey.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>About the Survey:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The forest survey for the first time has mapped 633 districts <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has relied on satellite mapping<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>India records marginal increase in forest cover Context: According to the biennial India State of Forest Report (SFR) 2017, India has recorded a marginal increase in forest cover.
