{"id":31361,"date":"2018-10-27T13:16:36","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31361"},"modified":"2018-10-27T13:16:36","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:46:36","slug":"let-the-chips-fall-where-they-may","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/let-the-chips-fall-where-they-may\/","title":{"rendered":"Let the chips fall where they may"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/let-the-chips-fall-where-they-may\/article22725415.ece\"><b>Let the chips fall where they may<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dealing with the unfolding political drama in the Maldives requires a great deal of craft, patience and diplomacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of restoring democracy and civil liberties in Male, India must <\/span><b>look after its strategic interests in the increasingly chaotic Indian Ocean Region. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is in news?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever since Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom became the President of the island nation in 2013, <\/span><b>the country has grown closer to China.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also fears that <\/span><b>Male might eventually allow Chinese military presence on its soil, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thereby providing <\/span><b>China with a strategic military base in the Indian Ocean.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current events, therefore, have India worried, and rightly so.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Changing dynamics:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s fundamental concern is <\/span><b>not the suspension of civil liberties or setback to democracy in the Maldives.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is<\/span><b> how China would increase its stocks in Male at the expense of India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has of late been <\/span><b>anxious about its steadily losing stature in the neighborhood <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i.e. its inability to act in the Maldives will only further accentuate this reality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>South Asia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> traditionally had one hegemon, India; today it has two, <\/span><b>India and China.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India should desist from undertaking<\/span><b> \u201ccivilising missions\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to educate its neighbours on civil liberties and democracy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Costs<\/b><b> of an Indian intervention:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The costs of an Indian intervention gone wrong would far <\/span><b>outweigh any potential benefits from a successful intervention.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Indian intervention, especially by an overtly Hindu-right wing government, will <\/span><b>push the Maldives towards more Islamist politics,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> something the Gayoom regime will use to its advantage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is <\/span><b>no guarantee that a military or some other overt form of intervention in the Maldives would ensure a rift between China and the Maldives; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instead, it may even have the reverse effect.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian intervention could also <\/span><b>complicate life for over 25,000 Indian expatriates <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who live and work in the Maldives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Sermons about civil liberties and democracy are a double-edged sword<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that could easily come back to haunt us.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intervening in what is strictly a domestic political issue of the Maldives would also be in breach of India\u2019s traditional approach to dealing with crises in its neighbourhood.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let the chips fall where they may Dealing with the unfolding political drama in the Maldives requires a great deal of craft, patience and diplomacy.
