dragging the flat box across the rocky sand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The desolate desert in <\/span><b>southern Oman, near the borders of Yemen and Saudi Arabia, resembles Mars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so much that more than <\/span><b>200 scientists from 25 nations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chose it as their location for the next four weeks, to field-test technology for a manned mission to Mars.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Dhofar Desert:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the eastern edge of Dhofar Desert is the <\/span><b>Oman Mars Base<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>giant 2.4-ton inflated habitat <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surrounded by shipping containers <\/span><b>turned into labs and crew quarters.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Base of Dhofar Desert:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seen from space, the Dhofar Desert is <\/span><b>a flat, brown expanse.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Few animals or plants survive <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the desert expanses of the Arabian Peninsula, where temperatures can top 51 degrees Celsius.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The desert\u2019s surface resembles Mars so much, it\u2019s hard to tell the difference because <\/span><b>the types of geomorphology, all the structures, the salt domes, the riverbeds, the wadis, it parallels a lot of what can be seen on Mars.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>AMADEE-18:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Omani government offered to host the <\/span><b>Austrian Space Forum\u2019s next Mars simulation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during a meeting of the UN\u2019s Committee On the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists from across the world sent ideas for experiments and the mission, named <\/span><b>AMADEE-18, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quickly grew to 16 scientific experiments.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>A walk on Mars:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SpaceX founder Elon Musk declared humans would <\/span><b>walk on Mars in a few decades.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New challengers like China are joining the U.S. and Russia in space with an <\/span><b>ambitious Mars program.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aerospace corporations like <\/span><b>BlueOrigin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have published schematics of future bases, ships and suits.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Personal spaceship:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cutting-edge spacesuit, weighing about 50 kg, is called a <\/span><b>\u201cpersonal spaceship\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because one can breathe, eat and do hard science inside it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The suit\u2019s visor displays <\/span><b>maps, communications and sensor data.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Next step to Mars:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next step to Mars, is to <\/span><b>tackle non-engineering problems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like medical emergency responses and isolation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While cosmonauts and astronauts are learning <\/span><b>valuable spacefaring skills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the International Space Station and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. is using <\/span><b>virtual reality to train scientists,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the majority of work to prepare for interplanetary expeditions is
