{"id":31417,"date":"2018-10-27T13:28:58","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:58:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31417"},"modified":"2018-10-27T13:28:58","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:58:58","slug":"a-disquieting-silence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/a-disquieting-silence\/","title":{"rendered":"A disquieting silence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/a-disquieting-silence\/article22697048.ece\"><b>A disquieting silence<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Rohingya, <\/span><b>other than inking an \u201cagreement\u201d with Naypyidaw<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that normalcy and development would be promoted in the restive Rakhine state, government\u2019s only public position has been to <\/span><b>announce that it intends to send the nearly 40,000 Rohingya in India back to Myanmar.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>India, Myanmar and China\u2019s take on the issue:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, far as India is concerned, <\/span><b>Rohingya people are all illegal immigrants and anybody who is an illegal immigrant has to be deported.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While India argues that it is <\/span><b>not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which forbids a country that accepts <\/span><b>asylum seekers from returning them to a country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myanmar has <\/span><b>neither said nor done anything to indicate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it is willing to recognise the now stateless Rohingya as citizens with basic rights, the first step to giving them a secure future.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of regional geopolitics, India has <\/span><b>ceded the diplomatic high ground to China, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never famous for welcoming refugees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With <\/span><b>China taking a lead in bringing Myanmar and Bangladesh together<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in exploratory talks for the eventual return of the Rohingya, South Block must realise that both Dhaka and Naypyidaw are paying more attention to Beijing than they are to India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A disquieting silence Context: In the case of Rohingya, other than inking an \u201cagreement\u201d with Naypyidaw that normalcy and development would be promoted in the restive Rakhine state, government\u2019s only public position has been to announce that it intends to send the nearly 40,000 Rohingya in India back to Myanmar.
