{"id":31418,"date":"2018-10-27T13:29:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31418"},"modified":"2018-10-27T13:29:12","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:59:12","slug":"cease-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/cease-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Cease fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/cease-fire\/article22697032.ece\"><b>Cease fire<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2003 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan is now alive only in the breach, with violations <\/span><b>intensifying in number and much damage to life and livelihood along the border.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2003 ceasefire agreement:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to see the 2003 agreement in <\/span><b>the immediate context of the time.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It came just <\/span><b>four years after the Kargil war,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and soon after India and Pakistan almost went to war following the December 13, 2001 terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Current scenario:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In the latest incident, <\/span><b>four Indian soldiers, including an Army Captain, were killed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Bhimber Gali sector in cross-border firing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These casualties are a <\/span><b>natural extension <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of what has been unfolding along the <\/span><b>International Boundary as well as the Line of Control<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the past several months.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, <\/span><b>2017 has turned out to be the worst year since the agreement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brought calm to the border 15 years ago.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By way of comparison, in <\/span><b>2015 there had been 152 incidents, and in 2016 there were 228.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>January 2018<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recorded the highest number of ceasefire violations in a month <\/span><b>since 2003,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to estimates.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peace on the border is difficult to achieve at the tactical level by military leaders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restoring the ceasefire requires real statesmanship, not brinkmanship.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cease fire Context: The 2003 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan is now alive only in the breach, with violations intensifying in number and much damage to life and livelihood along the border. 2003 ceasefire agreement: It is important to see the 2003 agreement in the immediate context of the time.
