{"id":31443,"date":"2018-10-27T14:04:32","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T08:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31443"},"modified":"2018-10-27T14:04:32","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T08:34:32","slug":"indian-immigration-conundrum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indian-immigration-conundrum\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian immigration conundrum\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/indian-immigration-conundrum\/article22684136.ece'\"><b>Indian immigration conundrum<\/b><\/a><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recent President Donald Trump harsh rhetoric on <\/span><b>securing America\u2019s borders, not only through the southern border wall with Mexico, but also stricter enforcement of controls over legal migration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has created much disturbance among the Indian-Americans.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The issue:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migration is the engine that <\/span><b>powers the globally aspirational Indian of today<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, Indians have always been a <\/span><b>vibrant immigrant community<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on distant shores, consistently maintaining <\/span><b>deep familial and professional ties across the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The President\u2019s agenda <\/span><b>called for a protest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where a group of approximately 800 Indian-Americans gathered on Pennsylvania Avenue outside the White House.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Divergence in views of protesters:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The views of those protesters in Washington may represent the <\/span><b>divergence between the needs of visa-holding \u201caliens\u201dfrom India, and those of undocumented migrants to the U.S.,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an 11.4 million-strong population.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Undocumented workers:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undocumented workers <\/span><b>seek the unrestricted right to enroll<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in educational institutions, work, marry, and own property.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As well as <\/span><b>access social security, health insurance, college tuition support, and other such welfare benefits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the federal government is required by law to provide to U.S. persons.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Non-immigrant workers:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, non-immigrant workers are focussed on <\/span><b>attaining a higher level of access to and integration into their adopted home.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They seek to <\/span><b>convert their alien status into permanent resident or citizen status<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These aspiring migrants, who consider themselves to be on the \u201cmerit\u201d side of Mr. Trump\u2019s immigration paradigm, also <\/span><b>separate themselves from the \u201cfamily-based migrants,\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who seek to <\/span><b>immigrate legally to the U.S. based on the status of close family members and not work-related qualifications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indian immigration conundrum\u00a0 Context: The recent President Donald Trump harsh rhetoric on securing America\u2019s borders, not only through the southern border wall with Mexico, but also stricter enforcement of controls over legal migration has created much disturbance among the Indian-Americans.
