{"id":31452,"date":"2018-10-27T14:08:54","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T08:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31452"},"modified":"2018-10-27T14:08:54","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T08:38:54","slug":"air-pollution-behind-poor-lung-capacity-among-kids-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/air-pollution-behind-poor-lung-capacity-among-kids-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Air pollution behind poor lung capacity among kids: study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/tp-newdelhi\/air-pollution-behind-poor-lung-capacity-among-kids-study\/article22684514.ece\"><b>Air pollution behind poor lung capacity among kids: study<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A report released by the <\/span><b>Hazards Centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed that air pollution is behind poor lung capacity among children in Delhi<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>About the Study:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Particulate matter pollution was monitored over 15 different locations in Delhi<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study was conducted for more than three months in a row this winter on<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sample size of 343 <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study conducted a peak flow test (done to measure how well your lungs are working by assessing how quickly one can blow air)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tests were conducted in areas where the monitors are installed, and out of the 15 locations, the samples for the health study were taken from 11 different areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The samples were collected from Holambi, Bhalaswa, Ayanagar, Punjabi Bagh, Wazirpur, Seelampur, Seemapuri, Saket, Okhla-NFC, Badarpur-TGK and Munirka.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Highlights of the Report:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study revealed 80% of the sample population had unhealthy or below the normal lung functioning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The study also found that in the southern and northern peripheries of the city children seem to have better health <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> However, air is of poor quality in the entire city<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Air Pollution in Delhi:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The air quality monitoring highlighted the fact that there is a base pollution load across Delhi of about 300 ug\/m3 for PM10 and 200 ug\/m3 for PM2.5, which is three times higher than the approved limits<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Causes of the air pollution<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The source of pollution is located in Delhi <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industrial emission and vehicle fumes which has been sealed by cool temperature and still winds is the main reason behind this pollution<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> At the same time, mass burning of crop waste across the north Indian hinterland has sent dense smoke <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The impact<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Severe air pollution has caused a public health crisis in Delhi<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It not only causes respiratory diseases but in the longer term, consistent poor quality air is seen to be altering the demographics of cancer in the city.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Air pollution behind poor lung capacity among kids: study Context: A report released by the Hazards Centre revealed that air pollution is behind poor lung capacity among children in Delhi About the Study: Particulate matter pollution was monitored over 15 different locations in Delhi The study was conducted for more than three months in a&hellip;
