{"id":31531,"date":"2018-10-27T14:32:23","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T09:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31531"},"modified":"2018-10-27T14:32:23","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T09:02:23","slug":"link-between-sanitation-stunting-questioned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/link-between-sanitation-stunting-questioned\/","title":{"rendered":"Link between sanitation, stunting questioned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/link-between-sanitation-stunting-questioned\/article22637479.ece\">Link between sanitation, stunting questioned <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Relation between stunting and sanitation<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is stunting?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stunting is the impaired growth and development that children experience from poor nutrition, repeated infection, and inadequate psychosocial stimulation<\/li>\n<li>Children are defined as stunted if their height-for-age is more than two standard deviations below the WHO Child Growth Standards median<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(<em>source: WHO<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research findings were published in The Lancet Global Health on January 29<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stunting among children, or low height for age, is common in developing countries with poor sanitation.<\/li>\n<li>Scientists hypothesise that this is because open defecation and unclean water expose children to faecal bugs.<\/li>\n<li>Even if these pathogens do not cause diarrhoea, they inflame a child\u2019s gut and hamper the food absorption<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Recent studies show different results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where: <\/strong>Bangladesh and Kenya<\/p>\n<p><strong>Findings:<\/strong> The studies, which targeted over 13,000 families, showed that water purification, sanitary latrines and hand-washing (WASH) interventions in select households were not enough to prevent stunting in those households.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then what do the findings of The Lancet Global Health mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, WASH interventions may need to be very widespread to make a difference<\/li>\n<li>Second, factors other than WASH may be critical to stunting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Role of WASH might be declining<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier when the water was contaminated WASH might have played a major role but today when people are less exposed to pathogens, the role of WASH in stunting may be declining.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But exposure could occur from other sources too (besides unclean water and OD)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Children also come in contact with the outside environment and animal faeces<\/li>\n<li>Plus, while chlorine is a good disinfectant, it may not work against protozoa like Giardia lamblia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Link between sanitation, stunting questioned Context Relation between stunting and sanitation What is stunting?
