The island is a floating treatment wetland (FTW)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How plants help?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Several plants on this FTW help clean the lake by <strong>absorbing nutrients<\/strong> such as excess nitrates and oxygen present in the water. They thus reduce the content of these chemicals<\/p>\n<p><strong>National recognition to the FTW<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Measuring 3,000 sq. ft., the FTW is a joint effort of Dhruvansh, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, the Ranga Reddy district administration and other organisations. It has already been recognised by the India Book of Records as the <strong>largest FTW in the country<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The FTW comprises <strong>four layers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1<sup>st<\/sup> layer<\/strong>: Floatable bamboo forms its base, over which Styrofoam cubicles are placed (<strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup> layer<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>3<sup>rd<\/sup> layer<\/strong>: The third layer consists of gunny bags<\/p>\n<p><strong>4<sup>th<\/sup> Layer<\/strong>: The final layer is of gravel<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cleaning agents<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cleaning agents planted on the FTW include<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vetivers<\/li>\n<li>Canna<\/li>\n<li>Cattalis<\/li>\n<li>Bulrush<\/li>\n<li>Citronella<\/li>\n<li>Hibiscus<\/li>\n<li>fountain grass<\/li>\n<li>flowering herbs<\/li>\n<li>tulsi<\/li>\n<li>ashvagandha<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cleaning process by microorganisms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Micro-organisms growing on the FTW and plant root systems break down and consume the organic matter in the water through microbial decomposition.
