Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

India plans to make the Andaman and Nicobar Islands a tuna export hub. Earlier, the Department of Fisheries notified the development of a Tuna Cluster in the region<\/span> under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tuna Market Scenario<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> The global tuna market is valued at $41.94 billion, with the Indian Ocean being the second-largest tuna-producing region<\/span>, contributing 21% of the world’s tuna.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> The Andaman and Nicobar<\/span> Islands mainly harvest neritic tuna<\/span>, caught near the shore, along with small amounts of oceanic species like skipjack, big-eye, and yellowfin tuna.<\/p>\n
