News<\/strong>: Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a ceasefire. The ceasefire proposal draws on the provisions of Resolution 1701 passed by the UN Security Council (UNSC) in 2006.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Passed on August 11, 2006<\/strong><\/em>, UNSC Resolution 1701 aims to end hostilities between Hezbollah<\/strong><\/em> and Israel<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> It calls for the creation of a buffer zone<\/strong><\/em> and the establishment of a permanent ceasefire<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> The resolution meant to complete the withdrawal of Israeli forces in 2000<\/strong><\/em> from southern Lebanon along the \u2018Blue Line\u2019 and the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> It stipulates that the only armed groups in the area south of Lebanon\u2019s Litani River <\/strong><\/em>should be the Lebanese army<\/strong> and UN peacekeeping forces<\/em><\/strong> (UN Interim Force in Lebanon \u2013 UNIFIL).<\/p>\n

5. <\/strong>The Blue Line<\/strong><\/em>, set by the UN in 2000 after Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, now acts as a de facto border<\/strong><\/em> between the two countries.<\/p>\n

6. <\/strong>The full implementation of the Taif Accords<\/strong><\/em> and resolutions 1559 (2004) and 1680 (2006). It requires disarming all groups in Lebanon, leaving only the Lebanese State with weapons and authority.<\/p>\n
