{"id":31791,"date":"2018-10-29T11:13:01","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T05:43:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31791"},"modified":"2018-10-29T11:13:01","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T05:43:01","slug":"first-india-designed-vaccine-passes-who-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/first-india-designed-vaccine-passes-who-test\/","title":{"rendered":"First India-designed vaccine passes WHO test\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/first-india-designed-vaccine-passes-who-test\/article22512401.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First India-designed vaccine passes WHO test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For the first time, a vaccine conceived and developed from scratch in India has been \u201cpre-qualified\u201d by the World Health Organisation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While several vaccines from India have been pre-qualified, this is the first that was entirely developed locally and, according to experts, is a sign that there is a credible industrial, scientific and regulatory process in place to develop vaccines in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>About Rotavac vaccine:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rotavac vaccine, developed by the Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech Limited last year, was included in India\u2019s national immunisation programme.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be \u201cpre-qualified\u201d means that the vaccine can be sold internationally to several countries in Africa and South America.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rotavac vaccine protects against childhood diarrhoea caused by the rotavirus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some medics have raised concerns that the rotavirus vaccine carried a small chance of causing infants to develop a bowel disorder; but the Rotavac vaccine, having been tested in the field for over a year, have not shown any negative effect.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pune-based Serum International also has developed a rotavirus vaccine called Rabishield that has also been included in India\u2019s immunisation programme.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rotavirus is responsible for an estimated 36% of hospitalisations for childhood diarrhoea around the world and for an estimated 200,000 deaths in low- and middle-income countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First India-designed vaccine passes WHO test\u00a0 Context: For the first time, a vaccine conceived and developed from scratch in India has been \u201cpre-qualified\u201d by the World Health Organisation.
