{"id":31839,"date":"2018-10-29T11:30:27","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T06:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31839"},"modified":"2018-10-29T11:30:27","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T06:00:27","slug":"detecting-the-change-early-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/detecting-the-change-early-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Detecting the change early on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/detecting-the-change-early-on\/article22492093.ece\"><b>Detecting the change early on<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study by the researchers from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, published in the <\/span><b><i>Journal of Cell Science<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrates how normal cells change into cancerous ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is the method used in the study?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the study, <\/span><b>breast epithelial cells<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grown in 3D cultures have been used.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An alkylating agent (a drug used in chemotherapy) was used to induce the transformation of breast epithelial cells into cancerous cells by activating the DNA-PK gene.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To confirm that activation of DNA-PK was causing the phenomena of transformation, a small molecule was used to inhibit the activity of DNA-PK.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What does the study reveal?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study shows how the normal cells transform into cancerous cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The activated DNA-PK was found to disrupt the structure and function of the Golgi.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the disruption of the Golgi morphology, the movement of proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to the cell membrane via Golgi was found to be restricted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This further resulted in the disruption of the polarity which caused the epithelial cells transforming into cancerous cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Polarity is the ability to distinguish the top and bottom sides of the epithelial cells<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Detecting the change early on Context: A study by the researchers from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, published in the Journal of Cell Science demonstrates how normal cells change into cancerous ones.
