{"id":31882,"date":"2018-10-29T11:38:55","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T06:08:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31882"},"modified":"2018-10-29T11:38:55","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T06:08:55","slug":"on-a-new-keel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/on-a-new-keel\/","title":{"rendered":"On a new keel\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/editorial\/on-a-new-keel-netanyahus-visit-to-india\/article22475166.ece\">On a new keel<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s visit, India and Israel have fully normalised bilateral ties<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start in 1992<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That process began in 1992 when India established diplomatic ties with Israel, with major milestones in 2003 when Ariel Sharon became the first Israeli Prime Minister to visit India, in 2015 when President Pranab Mukherjee visited Israel, and in 2017 when\u00a0Narendra Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Israel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25-year timeline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With Mr. Netanyahu\u2019s six-day visit, the focus is now on the future, and their joint statement drew a 25-year timeline in which to realise the potential of the strategic partnership.<\/p>\n<p>The close personal equation between the two leaders was evident throughout the visit<\/p>\n<p><strong>On Business<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On business, Mr. Modi welcomed Israeli partnership in Indian manufacturing, pointing to the winning combination of an India that has \u201csize and scale\u201d and an Israel that has \u201csharpness and edge\u201d. Mr. Netanyahu\u2019s case, made at a speech inaugurating the Foreign Ministry\u2019s annual Raisina Dialogue, was that the two countries have a \u201cnatural partnership\u201d and a \u201cnatural friendship\u201d that also caters to their need for hard power.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More open conversation on peace (Palestine issue)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With a relationship that is more open, India has also decided to have a more honest conversation with\u00a0Israel\u00a0on the peace process<\/li>\n<li>While the Modi-Netanyahu meeting in July 2017 had practically brushed aside the Israel-Palestine peace process, the joint statement issued on Monday in New Delhi \u201creaffirmed their support for an early resumption of peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>This indicates that the two Prime Ministers had a deeper conversation on the issue this time, including India\u2019s vote at the UN against the decision of the United States to recognise Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Visit to Palestine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Modi is expected to visit Ramallah as well as meet Jordan\u2019s King Abdullah II, who as the custodian of the holy sites in Jerusalem is leading peace efforts in the Arab world, and is due in New Delhi shortly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>India using its leverage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This would take forward India\u2019s commitment to assisting in finding a just solution for the conflict.
