{"id":31891,"date":"2018-10-29T11:42:15","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T06:12:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31891"},"modified":"2018-10-29T11:42:15","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T06:12:15","slug":"navy-confident-of-commissioning-aircraft-carrier-vikrant-in-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/navy-confident-of-commissioning-aircraft-carrier-vikrant-in-two-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy confident of commissioning aircraft carrier Vikrant\u00a0in two years\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/navy-confident-of-commissioning-aircraft-carrier-vikrant-in-two-years\/article22474986.ece\">Navy confident of commissioning aircraft carrier Vikrant\u00a0in two years<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After several delays, the Indian Navy is confident of commissioning Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC-1)\u00a0<em>Vikrant,<\/em>\u00a0currently under construction at Kochi, by October 2020<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hold-ups in procuring major parts resolved<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The IAC-I project has been delayed due to hold-ups in procurement especially of 18 major equipment related to aviation complex, including the arrestor and the withstanding gear, from Russia<\/li>\n<li>There were licencing issues which have been resolved<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sea trials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The carrier is likely to be handed over to the Navy by December 2018 after which it will be put through harbour and sea trials before commissioning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vikrant<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Vikrant<\/em>borrows its name from India\u2019s first aircraft carrier, the 20,000-tonne INS\u00a0<em>Vikrant<\/em>\u00a0purchased from the U.K. India currently operates the 44,500-tonne INS\u00a0<em>Vikramaditya<\/em>\u00a0procured from Russia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>STOBAR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like INS\u00a0<em>Vikramaditya<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Vikrant<\/em>\u00a0too would employ the STOBAR (Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) mechanism with a ski-jump and arrestor cables to launch and recover aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Fighter Jets on Vikrant<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It can operate 20 fighter jets and 10 other aircraft<\/li>\n<li>The Mig-29K fighters currently in service with the Navy would also be on the deck of\u00a0<em>Vikrant<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Initially the plan was to have a mix of Mig-29K and the naval variant of the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Chronology<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The IAC-I project was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in 2003 and the keel for the 260-metre ship was laid in 2009<\/li>\n<li>The CCS had initially sanctioned \u20b93,200 crore, which was subsequently revised to \u20b919,341 crore.<\/li>\n<li>In a 2016 report, the Comptroller and Auditor-General (CAG) said that the \u201cdelivery of the carrier with completion of all activities is likely to be achieved only by 2023.\u201d But Navy officials stated that all issues have now been resolved and the ship would join the Navy in 2020.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>IAC-II<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Navy has already set sights on the IAC-II, which it envisages to be conventionally powered and displace 65,000 tonnes with an advanced Catapult-based Aircraft Launch Mechanism <strong>(CATOBAR)<\/strong> similar to the U.S. Electro-Magnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) for aircraft launch and recovery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p><strong>WORD POWER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Gordian knot: <\/strong>an extremely difficult or involved problem<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pecuniary: <\/strong>relating to or consisting of money<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Navy confident of commissioning aircraft carrier Vikrant\u00a0in two years\u00a0 Context After several delays, the Indian Navy is confident of commissioning Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC-1)\u00a0Vikrant,\u00a0currently under construction at Kochi, by October 2020 Hold-ups in procuring major parts resolved The IAC-I project has been delayed due to hold-ups in procurement especially of 18 major equipment related to&hellip;
