News:<\/strong> Human Rights Day is observed on 10th December every year to commemorate the adoption of Universal Declaration of Human Rights.<\/p>\n

To celebrate the Human Rights Day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is organising a programme at the Plenary Hall of the Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.<\/p>\n

About NHRC<\/h2>\n

It is a<\/span> statutory body<\/span> <\/strong><\/em>established under the<\/span> Prot<\/span>ection of Human Rights Act, 1993<\/span> and <\/span>in conformity with the<\/span> Paris Principles (1991<\/span>).<\/span><\/em><\/strong> The<\/span> Commission serves as the guardian <\/span>of human rights in the country. National Human Rights Commission<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Compositio<\/span>n:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022<\/span><\/span> The Co<\/span>mmission is a multi<\/span>–<\/span>member body<\/span> with a<\/span> chairperson<\/em><\/strong> and five members<\/em><\/strong><\/span>
(<\/span>excluding the ex<\/span>–<\/span>officio members<\/span>).<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span><\/span> Chairperson<\/span><\/strong>–<\/span> A<\/span> retired Chief Justice of India or a Supreme<\/span> Court judge<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span><\/span> Member<\/span>s:<\/span><\/span><\/strong>
\u2713<\/span><\/span> One member who is or has been a Judge of the Supreme Court.<\/span><\/span>
\u2713<\/span><\/span> One member who is or has been the Chief Justice of a High Court.<\/span><\/span>
\u2713<\/span><\/span> Three members appointed from individuals with knowledge of or practical<\/span>
experience in human rights<\/span> matters.<\/span><\/span>
\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Note<\/span><\/strong>:<\/strong> At least<\/span> one of the three members must be a woman<\/span>.
\n<\/span><\/span>
<\/span>Ex<\/span>–<\/span>officio<\/span> members<\/span><\/strong>–<\/span>Chairpersons<\/span> of<\/span> National<\/span> Commissions<\/span> viz.,<\/span> National<\/span>
Commission for Scheduled Castes, National Commission for Scheduled Tribes,<\/span>
National Commission for Women, National Commission for Minorities, National<\/span>
Commission for Backward Classes, National Commission for Protection of Child<\/span>
Rights; and<\/span> the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities<\/span>.
\n<\/span><\/span>
<\/span>Appointment<\/span>–<\/span><\/strong> The chairperson and members are appointed by the President based<\/span>
on recommendations from a<\/span> six<\/span>–<\/span>me<\/span>mber committee<\/span>, which includes<\/span> T<\/span>he Prime<\/span>
Minister (head)<\/span>,<\/span> Speaker of the Lok Sabha<\/span>,<\/span> Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha<\/span>,<\/span>
Leaders of the Opposition in both Houses<\/span>,<\/span> T<\/span>he Central Home Minister.
\n<\/span><\/span>
<\/span>Tenure<\/span><\/strong>–<\/span> The chairperson and members<\/span> serve a term of 3 years or until age 70<\/span>,<\/span>
whichever comes first, and are eligible for reappointment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Powers<\/span>–<\/span><\/strong> NHRC<\/span> has the powers of a civil court under the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
