{"id":31917,"date":"2018-10-29T11:49:02","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T06:19:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31917"},"modified":"2018-10-29T11:49:02","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T06:19:02","slug":"2017-was-the-second-or-third-warmest-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/2017-was-the-second-or-third-warmest-year\/","title":{"rendered":"2017 was the second or third warmest year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/2017-was-the-second-or-third-warmest-year-un\/article22466387.ece\"><strong>2017 was the second or third warmest year<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last year was the second or third warmest on record behind 2016, and the hottest without an extra dose of heat caused by an El Ni\u00f1o event in the Pacific Ocean, the United Nations (UN) said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Average temperatures were 1.1\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Average surface temperatures in 2017 were 1.1\u00b0C (2.0 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial times, creeping towards a 1.5\u00b0C (2.7 F) ceiling set as the most ambitious limit for\u00a0global warming\u00a0by almost 200 nations under the 2015 Paris climate agreement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No El Ni\u00f1o last year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last year was indistinguishable, so far, from 2015 as the second or third warmest behind 2016, making 2017 \u201cthe warmest year without an El Ni\u00f1o\u201d, the UN\u2019s World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s getting hotter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seventeen of the warmest 18 years since records began in the 19th century have now happened since 2000, confirming that ever more greenhouse gases are driving up temperatures, the WMO said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other effects<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among extreme weather events last year, the Caribbean and the United States suffered a battering from hurricanes, the Arctic ended 2017 with the least sea ice for mid-winter and tropical coral reefs suffered from high water temperatures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warmth in Arctic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Arctic warmth has been especially pronounced and this will have profound and long-lasting repercussions on sea levels, and on weather patterns in other parts of the world<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2017 was the second or third warmest year Context Last year was the second or third warmest on record behind 2016, and the hottest without an extra dose of heat caused by an El Ni\u00f1o event in the Pacific Ocean, the United Nations (UN) said on Thursday.
