{"id":31978,"date":"2018-10-29T12:04:56","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T06:34:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=31978"},"modified":"2018-10-29T12:04:56","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T06:34:56","slug":"megalithic-era-sarcophagus-unearthed-in-kerala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/megalithic-era-sarcophagus-unearthed-in-kerala\/","title":{"rendered":"Megalithic-era sarcophagus unearthed in Kerala\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/kerala\/megalithic-era-sarcophagus-unearthed-at-viyur\/article22450598.ece\"><strong>Megalithic-era sarcophagus unearthed in Kerala<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A rare sarcophagus (stone coffin), said to be 2,000-year old from the Iron Age\u2013Megalithic era, was discovered from a rock-cut cave at Viyur village of Kollam, near Koyilandy, in Kozhikode district on Monday<\/p>\n<p><strong>Man or woman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bone fragments could be of either a man or a woman<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Carbon dating<\/strong>: They will be sent for carbon dating using accelerator mass spectrometry at the Beta Analytical Laboratory in California<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Discovery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Excavation at the site commenced after a hemispherical rock-cut chamber was discovered in a compound while flattening land using an earthmover<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dimensions<\/strong>: The cave, with an inside pillar, measuring 1.9 metres in diameter, has a height of 90 centimetres<\/li>\n<li>The entrance of the cave was on the eastern side<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pottery found<\/strong>: The square-shaped door has equal length of 50 centimetres on all sides.
