Commercial Relations-<\/strong> India and Sri Lanka enjoy a vibrant and growing economic and commercial partnership, which has witnessed considerable expansion over the years.<br \/>\na. <strong>India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (ISFTA)-<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement<\/span> (ISFTA) in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2000<\/span> has contributed significantly towards the expansion of trade between the two countries.<br \/>\nb. <strong>Bilateral trade-<\/strong> India was Sri Lanka\u2019s largest trading partner, with an overall bilateral trade of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">USD 5.5 billion<\/span> in 2022.<br \/>\nc. <strong>FDI Investment from India-<\/strong> India is also one of the largest contributors to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Foreign Direct Investment<\/span> in Sri Lanka. According to the Central bank of Sri Lanka, the total FDI from India so far exceeds <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">US$ 2.2 billion<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Development Cooperation-<\/strong> Sri Lanka is one of India\u2019s major development partners and this partnership has been an important pillar of bilateral ties between the two countries over the years.<br \/>\na.<strong> Grant commitments-<\/strong> The overall commitment by India is more than <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">USD 3.5 billion<\/span>. Grant projects cut across sectors such as education, health, livelihood, housing, industrial development etc.<br \/>\nb. <strong>Demand driven development partnership-<\/strong> Demand-driven and people-centric nature of India\u2019s development partnership with Sri Lanka have been the cornerstone of this relationship.<\/p>\n<p>3.<strong> Cooperation in Maritime Security-<\/strong><br \/>\na. <strong>Joint Exercises-<\/strong> The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">SLINEX naval exercises<\/span> have become one of the most visible manifestations of Indo-Sri Lanka cooperation in maritime security.<br \/>\nb. <strong>Partnership in regional maritime security architecture-<\/strong> Sri Lanka is a part of India\u2019s regional maritime security architecture, with Sri Lankan coastal surveillance radars being integrated to the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">International Fusion Center \u2013 Indian Ocean Region<\/span> (IFC-IOR) at Gurugram in India.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><a id=\"toc4\"><\/a>What are India&#8217;s concerns with Sri-Lanka?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>1. <strong>Rising Chinese Footprint-<\/strong> China is spreading its tentacles in Sri Lanka by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">bagging the project<\/span> to develop an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">airport in capital Colombo<\/span>. India remains concerned due to lack of a level playing field for economic projects in Sri Lanka, with the Sri Lankan government at times openly siding with the Chinese.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. India&#8217;s security concerns-<\/strong> The regular movement of Chinese naval vessels, particularly submarines and the so-called research ships, is a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">matter of grave security concern<\/span> to India.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.
