{"id":32124,"date":"2018-10-29T12:44:44","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T07:14:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=32124"},"modified":"2018-10-29T12:44:44","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T07:14:44","slug":"gujarat-to-count-elusive-tigers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/gujarat-to-count-elusive-tigers\/","title":{"rendered":"Gujarat to count elusive tigers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressreader.com\/india\/the-hindu\/20180111\/281895888640476\"><strong>Gujarat to count elusive tigers <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Census to be held 33 years after a big cat was spotted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Dang District of Gujarat<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The counting exercise in Dang will be part of the nationwide tiger census.<\/li>\n<li>Gujarat, which houses a rich population of lions, will now see an exercise to find out if tigers also inhabit the State.<\/li>\n<li>The last time a tiger was spotted in Gujarat was way back in 1985<\/li>\n<li>Now, over three decades later, a census has been planned next month to ascertain the presence of the striped animal in the forest of Dang district.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Proposal approved by NTCA<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The State forest department earlier sent a proposal to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) for the census after some media reports suggested the presence of tigers in Dang.<\/li>\n<li>The proposal was approved by the NTCA, a statutory body under the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Earlier<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Till the early 1980s, there were tigers in Gujarat, mainly inhabiting the forests of Dang, Narmada and Sabarkantha districts, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Last tiger<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The last tiger died in a road accident in Dang in 1985<\/li>\n<li>No tiger was seen in the State after that<\/li>\n<li>Local people generally confuse hyenas with tigers and that is how they assume there are tigers in Gujarat forests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gujarat to count elusive tigers Context Census to be held 33 years after a big cat was spotted.
