{"id":32340,"date":"2018-10-29T13:38:55","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T08:08:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=32340"},"modified":"2018-10-29T13:38:55","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T08:08:55","slug":"doctors-call-off-strike-after-centre-defers-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/doctors-call-off-strike-after-centre-defers-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctors call off strike after Centre defers Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/doctors-call-off-strike-after-government-defers-national-medical-commission-bill\/article22353837.ece\"><strong>Doctors call off strike after Centre defers Bill<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Indian Medical Association (IMA) called off its 12-hour\u00a0 strike on Tuesday after the government referred the controversial National Medical Commission Bill, tabled in the Lok Sabha, to a Standing Committee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It will go now to Standing Committee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>IMA\u2019s next step would be to convince the Committee of the many flaws in the Bill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NMC bill<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill, 2017, seeks to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI) with a new body<\/li>\n<li>The Bill proposes a government-nominated chairman and members, who will be selected by a committee under the Cabinet Secretary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>View of the IMA: Government interference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The medical fraternity is opposing the clause, fearing that the body would effectively be run by the government<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Bridge Course<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bill also allows practitioners of Ayurveda and other traditional Indian systems of\u00a0medicine\u00a0the licence to prescribe allopathic drugs after they have passed a \u2018bridge course.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>MCI goes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In its current form, the Bill does away with the MCI and bring in a national licentiate examination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Government\u2019s view<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The government claims that the Bill will ease the processes for colleges to manage undergraduate and postgraduate courses<\/p>\n<p><strong>Old provision<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the MCI\u2019s approval was needed for establishing, renewing, recognising and increasing seats in an undergraduate course<\/p>\n<p><strong>New proposed provision<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under the new proposal, permission needs to be sought only for establishment and recognition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMA<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The IMA said that the NMC would not be \u201cnational\u201d as it did not represent all States<\/li>\n<li>In its merging of Ayush with modern medicine, it posed a potential threat to patients and was as risky as an untested medical \u201ctrial.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Doctors call off strike after Centre defers Bill Context The Indian Medical Association (IMA) called off its 12-hour\u00a0 strike on Tuesday after the government referred the controversial National Medical Commission Bill, tabled in the Lok Sabha, to a Standing Committee.
