{"id":324147,"date":"2025-01-22T12:26:27","date_gmt":"2025-01-22T06:56:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=324147"},"modified":"2025-01-22T12:26:27","modified_gmt":"2025-01-22T06:56:27","slug":"national-board-for-wildlife-nbwl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-board-for-wildlife-nbwl\/","title":{"rendered":"National Board for Wildlife (NBWL)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News<\/strong>: The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has rejected the Uttarakhand government\u2019s proposal to conduct soapstone mining near the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/p>\n<h2>About National Board for Wildlife<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <em>Statutory body<\/em> constituted by the Central Government under Section 5 A of the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/wildlife-protection-act-1972-2\/#:~:text=The%20Act%20imposes%20a%20ban,breeding%20programme%20for%20endangered%20species.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (WLPA)<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>It is worth noting that the Wildlife Act of 1972 did not originally include the NBWL. The <em>NBWL was established later through an amendment in 2002<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>It replaced the <em>Indian Board for Wildlife<\/em>, which was formed in 1952.<\/li>\n<li>The NBWL is tasked with advising the government on wildlife conservation matters and granting approvals for projects within protected areas (PAs).<\/li>\n<li>According to the Wildlife Protection Act (WLPA), activities such as constructing tourist lodges,<em> altering PA boundaries<\/em>, diverting or destroying wildlife habitats, and de-notifying Tiger Reserves <em>cannot proceed without the NBWL&#8217;s approval or recommendations.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Structure of NBWL<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chairperson:<\/strong> The Prime Minister.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vice-Chairperson:<\/strong> The Minister in charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Member-Secretary:<\/strong> The Additional Director General of Forests (Wildlife) &amp; Director, Wildlife Preservation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Members:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>3 Members of Parliament (2 from Lok Sabha and 1 from Rajya Sabha).<\/li>\n<li>5 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).<\/li>\n<li>10 eminent conservationists, ecologists, and environmentalists nominated by the central government.<\/li>\n<li>Secretaries of various government departments.<\/li>\n<li>The Chief of Army Staff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Standing Committee of NBWL<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Standing Committee is an <em>independent body under the NBWL.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>It is <em>chaired by the Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>It consists of not more than ten members nominated by the Minister from amongst the members of the NBWL.<\/li>\n<li>While the NBWL serves as a policy-making body that advises and contributes to the Central Government&#8217;s wildlife protection policies, the Standing Committee primarily focuses on project clearances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has rejected the Uttarakhand government\u2019s proposal to conduct soapstone mining near the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.
