{"id":32454,"date":"2018-10-29T14:46:45","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T09:16:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=32454"},"modified":"2018-10-29T14:46:45","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T09:16:45","slug":"unseemly-spat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/unseemly-spat\/","title":{"rendered":"Unseemly spat\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/editorial\/unseemly-spat-kulbhushan-jadhav\/article22288593.ece\">Unseemly spat<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India and Pakistan must step back from the accusatory exchange over the Jadhav reunion<\/p>\n<p><strong>Further Deterioration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The meeting in Islamabad between former naval commander\u00a0Kulbhushan Jadhav and his family\u00a0should have been a sign that India and Pakistan are able to adhere to internationally accepted norms in dealing with officers accused of espionage<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Mr. Jadhav\u2019s meeting with his mother and his wife has led quickly to an\u00a0unseemly spat,\u00a0with fears that bilateral ties could now deteriorate further<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason to Complain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India has reason to complain on several counts<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, it took months for Pakistan to allow the meeting after Pakistan conducted a secret military court trial of Mr. Jadhav on terrorism and spying charges, which seemed a sham<\/li>\n<li>India had to take its case for consular access to the International Court of Justice for Pakistan to be made to pause the process, and give a commitment that Mr. Jadhav\u2019s execution sentence would be on hold pending a decision<\/li>\n<li>Second, having accepted the visit, Pakistan\u2019s Foreign Office turned a personal, humanitarian meeting into a media circus, with photographs of the meeting and a\u00a0prepared video statement from Mr. Jadhav\u00a0thanking the Pakistani government released<\/li>\n<li>A gaggle of hostile journalists hurled undignified questions at the women.
