Ten years ago, on January 22, 2015<\/span>, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP)<\/strong> initiative with the ambitious goal of addressing the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR)<\/span> and promoting the survival, protection, and education of the girl child.<\/p>\n

To mark its 10th anniversary, a nationwide celebration from January 22, 2025, to March 8, 2025, is underway, aligning with India\u2019s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision<\/span>. However over the past decade, the scheme has seen both significant achievements and notable challenges, shaping its legacy as a transformative program for gender equity in India.<\/p>\n

<\/a>What is the overview of the BBBP Scheme?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Launch and Objectives:<\/strong> BBBP was introduced in Panipat, Haryana, with the core objectives of:
\na.<\/strong> Arresting the decline in Child Sex Ratio (CSR)
\nb.<\/strong> Preventing gender-biased sex selection.
\nc.<\/strong> Promoting the survival, protection, and education of girls.<\/p>\n

Initially targeting 100 districts, the program expanded to cover 61 additional districts in 2015-16 and was eventually implemented across all 640 districts in India<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Integration with Mission Shakti:\u00a0 <\/strong>BBBP is now part of <\/span>Mission for implementation during the 15th Finance Commission period from 2021-2022 to 2025-2026,<\/span><\/b> focusing on women\u2019s safety and empowerment. It has two sub-schemes-<\/span>
\n<\/span>a. Sambal:<\/span><\/b> Ensures safety through <\/span>One Stop Centres, Women Helpline (181<\/span>),<\/span> and <\/span>Nari Adalat<\/span> for grievance redressal.<\/span>
\n<\/span>b. Samarthya:<\/span><\/b> Promotes empowerment <\/span>via Shakti Sadans, Sakhi Niwas, Palna-Creche<\/span>, and <\/span>Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY)<\/span> for maternal health.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, the SANKALP-HEW (Hub for Empowerment of Women)<\/strong> serves as a single-window mechanism for women\u2019s welfare schemes.<\/p>\n

Key Objectives:
\na.<\/strong> Improve Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) by 2 points annually.
\nb.<\/strong> Sustain institutional deliveries at 95% or above.
\nc.<\/strong> Increase first-trimester Ante-Natal Care (ANC) registration by 1% annually.
\nd.<\/strong> Boost girls\u2019 enrollment in secondary education and skill development.
\ne.<\/strong> Reduce dropout rates among girls.
\nf.<\/strong> Promote awareness of Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM).<\/p>\n

Target Groups
\n<\/span><\/b>a. Primary:<\/span><\/b> Young couples, expecting parents, adolescents, and communities.<\/span>
\n<\/span>b. Secondary:<\/span><\/b> Schools, Anganwadi Centers, medical professionals, PRIs, SHGs, media, and religious leaders.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Financial Structure<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Funding:<\/span><\/b> 100% centrally sponsored<\/span> under Mission Shakti\u2019s Sambal vertical.<\/span><\/b>

\n<\/span>a. Rs. 40 lakh\/year<\/span><\/b> for districts with <\/span>SRB \u2264918.<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>b. Rs. 30 lakh\/year<\/span><\/b> for <\/span>SRB 919-952.<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>c. Rs. 20 lakh\/year<\/span><\/b> for <\/span>SRB >952.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
