{"id":32563,"date":"2018-10-29T15:21:03","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T09:51:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=32563"},"modified":"2018-10-29T15:21:03","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T09:51:03","slug":"new-skin-gel-offers-protection-from-some-pesticides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/new-skin-gel-offers-protection-from-some-pesticides\/","title":{"rendered":"New skin gel offers protection from some pesticides"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/health\/new-skin-gel-offers-protection-from-some-pesticides\/article25265861.ece\"><b>New skin gel offers protection from some pesticides<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>News:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently a gel was developed by Indian researchers which, when applied on the skin, can inhibit some pesticides from getting absorbed into the body, thus averting serious adverse effects and even death.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Important Facts: <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>How pesticides harm body?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organophosphate-based pesticides, which are commonly used by farmers in India, are toxic to the nervous system and heart, and can cause cognitive dysfunction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When esters present in organophosphate-based pesticides enter the body they bind and inhibit an enzyme (acetylcholinesterase or AChE) critical for nerve and muscle function. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This causes neurological disorders, suffocation, paralysis, and even death.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>About the research: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research was conducted by \u00a0Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, Bengaluru, an autonomous institute under the Department of Biotechnology. <\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. The results of the study were published in the <\/span><b>journal \u2018<\/b><b><i>Science Advances\u2019<\/i><\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. The scientists used a chemical reaction to convert the ester into acid by using a catalyst to make the pesticide inactive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4. About the gel:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since organophosphate-based pesticides are absorbed through the skin, the researchers made a gel with active ingredients of the gel attached to chitosan (a substance found in the hard outer shells of crab and shrimp) so that gel does not penetrate the skin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The gel was effective in a range of temperatures (20\u00b0-40\u00b0 C) and a single application could offer protection for four continuous days of pesticide exposure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gel does not act like a physical barrier but chemically deactivates the pesticides thereby limiting the inhibition of the enzyme and can be washed off using soap.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>5. Successful experiment: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists conducted the experiment successfully on rats. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was found that the rats which did not receive the gel application when exposed to the pesticide died within seven days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, all the animals that received the gel survived even 30 days after exposure to pesticides. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, none of the rats that received the gel application showed any visible signs of toxicity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New skin gel offers protection from some pesticides News: Recently a gel was developed by Indian researchers which, when applied on the skin, can inhibit some pesticides from getting absorbed into the body, thus averting serious adverse effects and even death.
